Ruth Maclennan Bio
Ruth Maclennan’s films begin with an encounter with a place—a futuristic capital city, a derelict building, a ruined railway station in a desert, a fishing boat off the coast of Scotland. She focuses on overlooked moments, material remains and fragments of stories that reveal unresolved conflict. She exhibits internationally in exhibitions and film festivals. Call of North, filmed in the Russian Arctic, premiered at the 58th London International Film Festival. Her film Theodosia was shot in Crimea a year before its annexation by Russia. It was screened at ICA, London, and in the solo exhibition, The Faces They Have Vanished. Her film Anarcadia, made in the steppes of Kazakhstan is a film, book and exhibition commissioned by FVU and John Hansard Gallery, toured nationally and to international film festivals. Other exhibitions and projects include Somewhere Becoming Sea, (Hull City of Culture) Terrapolis, (French School Athens, curated by Whitechapel Gallery), Interspecies (Arts Catalyst, Cornerhouse), the interdisciplinary project, State of Mind at London School of Economics, and Archway Polytechnic (www.archwaypolytechnic.org ). Maclennan exhibits widely internationally, in exhibitions and film festivals in Europe, USA, Japan, Australia and Central Asia, Korea, Taiwan and Ireland. Her films are held in public and private collections, including Wellcome Collection and Centre Pasqu’Art, Biel. She has a Masters in Fine Art from Goldsmiths College, and in Modern Languages from Cambridge University, and a PhD in Fine Art from the Royal College of Art on experiences of climate change in northern Russia and Scotland, following her expeditions to the White Sea and to Orkney and Shetland with Cape Farewell. LUX Artists’ Moving Image distributes her films.
